Restylane is a crystal clear injectable and is the property of Galderma Pharmaceutical. Their byline is “Restylane, Natural Elegance.” So, what is this mysterious product and what does it do? What’s more, results can you expect for wrinkles and nasolabial folds?

What Is Restylane?

According to Galderma’s official Restylane webpage, “Restylane is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid.” It acts “like your body’s own [natural] hyaluronic acid, helping to visibly correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.” Interesting isn’t it?

Hyaluronic acid is already naturally in the body, but, the ingredients in Restylane behave like and resemble this protein. Consider this, if a physician is injecting a product under your skin that is almost identical to a naturally occurring sugar in your body, then the side effects must be minimal!

The Collection

To clarify, the Restylane collection includes 6 products. Namely, Restylane, Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Silk, Restylane Refyne, and Restylane Defyne.

The Original Recipe

Restylane is nonanimal based and free from animal protein. What’s more, allergy pretesting is not necessary. In fact, the product lasts up to six months and gradually disappears from your body. Again, this original formula is designed for facial lines and wrinkles.

Adding Lidocaine

According to Galderma, Restylane-L is much like the original product in that it “is non-animal based and free from animal protein.” However, what sets this product apart from the rest of the collection is that it “contains 0.3% lidocaine.” Why? “The lidocaine [will] reduce the discomfort associated with the treatment.”

Restylane Lyft’s patient brochure says that this product is can help “plump the skin.” In addition, it can “smooth away wrinkles and folds such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth”. Even increasing the “fullness of your cheeks.”

In addition, the brochure lists several areas of the body, wherein you can use this product, such as, the face, the lips, and the hands.

Silk, Refyne, and Defyne

Restylane Silk again has the same properties as the original Restylane and the additional 0.3% lidocaine. Except that this version “contains [hyaluronic acid] that has been modified to last longer in the body than the naturally occurring [protein].” (Italics ours.)

The second unique aspect of this product is that its design for “patients over the age of 21.”

“As you age, your facial skin begins to lose its elasticity and volume. As a result, your laugh lines, the creases that run from the sides of your nose toward the corners of your mouth, become more pronounced,” so, says Galderma. Restylane Refyne injectable gel can to temporarily help counter this “by smoothing out these wrinkles and folds and restoring a natural, soft look to your face.”

However, this product can “maintain this effect for up to 12 months,” noting that “facial features can differ.”

Restylane Defyne is made out of hyaluronic acid . . . and a small amount of lidocaine, which is a commonly used local anesthetic to numb the skin.” What sets this version apart from the others is that this one “is made using a manufacturing process called XpresHAn Technology™, which creates a smooth, injectable gel that can give your skin a natural, soft look.”

“Restylane Defyne injectable gel is designed to temporarily help counter [aging] by smoothing out these wrinkles and folds and restoring a natural, soft look to your face.” In fact, it’s even been shown to maintain this effect for up to 12 months.
